In November, it once again takes centre stage in garden centres and winter arrangements: Helleborus niger, the Christmas rose. With its pure white flowers, it is the ideal plant for bringing atmosphere indoors during the festive season.

However, the Christmas rose is naturally an outdoor plant. So you can enjoy it indoors first, and then — once the festive season is over — move it safely outside.

Caring for Helleborus niger indoors (November – December)

Many people use Helleborus niger as a temporary indoor plant during Christmas and winter decorations. This is perfectly fine, as long as you follow a few rules.

Keep it cool

Helleborus niger is definitely not a classic houseplant.

  • Ideal indoor temperature: 10–16°C.

  • Do not place it next to the heating.

  • Best locations: conservatory, cool hall, guest room, unheated kitchen or light stairwell.

The warmer it is indoors, the faster the flowers and leaves will wilt.

Light

  • Plenty of natural light.

  • Preferably not in bright midday sun behind glass.

  • No dark corners — otherwise it will droop.

Watering

  • Keep the potting soil slightly moist.

  • Allow excess water to drain away.

  • Never allow the plant to “drink” from water at the bottom of the decorative pot.

Indoors in a pot

  • A pot with drainage holes is a must.

  • Terrace potting soil or coarse-textured potting soil works best.

  • If necessary, add hydro granules to the bottom to prevent wet feet

How long indoors?

  • 2 to a maximum of 4 weeks.

  • After that, it must be moved outside, because flowering indoors = plant loses strength.

Moving outside (January – February)

After the festive season, Helleborus niger can be transplanted into the garden or left to overwinter outdoors in a pot.

Allow it to acclimatise

First, place it for a few days:

  • in a sheltered spot outdoors
  • without strong winds
  • preferably just above freezing

Please note: in severe frost → temporarily place in a cool spot (not in a warm living room).

Now your plant is where it belongs — outside in the fresh air.

The ideal location

  • Light shade is perfect
  • Under a deciduous tree is ideal
  • It can be exposed to the sun in winter
  • Preferably shade in summer

Planting

Best planting period: September to March

  • Planting hole: 30 x 30 cm, 20 cm deep
  • Do not plant deeper than the top of the root ball
  • Water well after planting
  • Planting distance: 45–60 cm

Soil

  • Nutritious, humus-rich, calcareous
  • Work compost or leaf mould into the soil
  • Heavy soil? → add some gravel for drainage
  • Sandy soil? → add humus + bentonite

Care

  • In March/April: apply organic lime-rich fertiliser.
  • In September: fertilise again (flower bud formation).
  • In winter: remove old or unsightly leaves.
  • A layer of leaves around the plant keeps the roots fresh and protected.

Hardy plant

Helleborus niger is completely hardy.
Do you have flowers that droop in frost? → This is normal! They will stand upright again when the frost thaws.

“Helleborus niger is the perfect combination of winter cosiness indoors and timeless beauty outdoors. Enjoy it during the festive season and then give it a place in the garden where it will return year after year.”
